I’m going to
tell you about an anecdote of my girlfriend’s father. His name was Frederick
and he was born on 1905 in Switzerland. He traveled to Mexico for vacation and
he loved it so much, that he decided to stay and live here.
I didn’t have
the opportunity of meeting him, but my girlfriend talks to me about him, and I
think this history is very interesting and funny.
He traveled
from Europe to America in a transatlantic boat. When he arrived to Mexico, he
disembarked in Veracruz. He spoke Spanish not very fluently at that time. He
started walking down the street and he saw a street food stand. He was hungry
and it smelled delicious, so he decided to get close and have a bite.
He told the
woman who was cooking and taking care of the food stand: One, please! The woman
gave him a taco stuffed with some king of stew she had ready. He enjoyed every
bite, and told the woman again: One, please! The woman asked: Another one? And
he answered again: No. One, please! As he didn’t spoke or understood Spanish
very well, he was afraid ANOTHER meant another type of food, and he wanted more
of what he had just eat. He had eaten 8 tacos, and ordered a last one. By then,
the stew was over. The woman added a handful of live insects into the oil, and
Frederick was astonished when he saw that awful thing. He paid, grabbed his taco, and started
walking to the next corner. When he realized he was alone, he took a look at
the inside of the taco and watched that it was full of worms and threw it away.
Since that
day, he was very careful with the food he ate, and he never tasted any kind of
insect again.
I hope you
enjoy this anecdote as much as I did when I heard it the first time.
Best Regards,
